Some of my students asked me: "Can I write a letter to Harry Potter? Maybe he will answer...". I thought it was a great idea. Now my students write letters with great desire. Of course it takes me sometime to answer them, but it gives the resaults. This method is the way to teach children to write informal letters and learn the letter patterns.
